Statement

Although I am now known as a painter, I didn’t begin that way. From the get-go I was always creating art. I sewed, crocheted, took a batik class and tried my hand at needle point. And then like many women of my generation I went back to college at 38 with a family. I first took drawing classes at Dutchess Community College. We began with still life, I suppose because those subjects won’t move away from you, or baffle you with light that is constantly changing. I was hooked.

I returned fulltime to get a degree at Vassar where I studied painting. And I have never stopped. I no longer teach, so my absorption is painting the Hudson River Valley environment where I have lived for 60 years. My experience with the rivers, marches, mountains and farmland are always imbued with an overarching respect for nature and those who work on the farms and waters.

I adore vibrant colors, the roiling storms, panoramic sunsets and everchanging seasons in this valley. They continue to provide equal parts inspiration and challenge to capture their fierce beauty. I try to push material boundaries and so I work with pastels to capture light or spare, rich monotypes to explore emotional landscape. Often in my larger works I will layer paint to create a landscape within a landscape. Mountains created with mountains. I am drawn to process and so all of the approaches I choose inform new directions and results.

Although my works often depict water and weather, I consider these elements to be the nexus for how my world, our world, is changing. I want to show respect and devotion to this quickly morphing world. Painting is still an exciting challenge for me. I want to keep pushing past mere representation and discover new ways to express an emotional reaction to my surroundings.

I am blessed to be included in a number of personal collections and I continue to show in a variety of galleries up and down the East Coast, including open studios during Labor Day weekend in my studio in Germantown New York.
