MARIE COLE – THEMES & VARIATIONS, an exhibition of paintings, pastels and monoprints will open at the Tivoli Artists Gallery on September 24, 2021 and will run through October 17. There will be an opening reception for the artist on September 25, 5-7 p.m. Gallery hours are Friday, 5-8:30 p.m., Saturday, noon-8:00 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m.- 5 p.m. And by appointment.

Marie Cole’s works build on her personal experiences of the sea, rivers, mountains, marshes and farmland, and reflect her love of the landscape. Water and weather are two constant and significant themes. The works are imbued with the drama of approaching storms, brilliant sunsets and the constantly changing color palette of the seasons, inspired by views from her studio windows that face the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains and the salt marshes of the Delaware Bay.

Process is first and foremost with Cole, and the works push material boundaries. Vibrant pastels capture light and shadow, while spare, rich monotypes, explore emotional color. Minimalist forms emerge, suggestive of landscapes both real and imagined. These approaches inform one another, reveal new directions, and generate ideas for paintings.

In her larger works, paint is piled up in lush layers or scraped down to reveal a hidden ground. They are in turn a collection of brush strokes, emerging from a practice of intuitive mark-making, and glistening water or luminous cloud forms. It is here where we see her feelings for the landscape most fully realized. Cole tells us “Painting is an exciting challenge for me, to keep pushing forward, past mere representation. I am always trying to find new ways to express my emotional reaction to my surroundings. My latest work is from real, remembered and imagined landscapes. It is a new and exciting path that keeps me energized and engaged in the studio on a daily basis”.

Cole exhibits at galleries throughout the east coast and participates in the Art Studio Views open studio tour during Labor Day weekend. Her paintings are in private collections from coast to coast. Her home and studio are in Germantown on the Hudson River in a renovated warehouse.
